How To Build A Wine Cellar

Choose a site
When constructing a wine cellar, you are basically building a refrigerator. The first thing to do is to decide where and what size you want your cellar.

Vapor barrier
A vapor barrier should be installed on the warm side of all walls and ceiling (the wine cellar is the cold side). Concrete floors should be sealed with a water base sealant.

The next step is to frame out your walls-2"x4" interior walls and 2"x6" exterior walls. If you are going to use rigid Cleotex/R-max type with foil on both sides you can frame interior walls with 2"x2" with 1.5"rigid and your exterior walls 2"x4" with 3" rigid.

The interior walls should have a minimum of R-11 insulation and exterior walls should have a minimum of R-19. The ceiling and any above ground floors should have a minimum of R-19 with a vapor barrier.

Doors and windows
Doors and windows should be of exterior grade and weather-stripped ie. Insulated door, double pane glass.

It is recommended that you use low voltage track lighting.

Paint and stain
The type of wall surface you use, drywall (green board is preferred) or wood should be painted or stained with a water base covering and allowed to completely air out.

We use your room volume to size your cooling unit requirements ( LxWxH= volume). With several models to choose from we can temperature control any size room.
